Santa Clara Meditation Column – How do I become mentally strong?
People who are mentally strong are not self-centered. They live in harmony with other members of society, without even thinking that it is for others. That’s why people who are strong mentally have big hearts, and they live successful and happy lives.
On the contrary, what is a weak mind? (A weak mind is my specialty, hahaha!) The human mind is fake because it changes day and night. It’s hard for mentally weak people to live a successful life because what they know thoroughly is only themselves. There are a lot of conflicts because they don’t understand the other person well, and so they are not happy.

One movie I watched in high school is “Farewell My Concubine,” directed by Chen Kaige in 1993. It is a sad and beautiful film about how the love between the three main characters turns into hatred, regret, and callousness in a turbulent period of modern Chinese history.
I was never able to forget the scenes and plot for a while after watching the movie. How helpless humans are through the years! I think that love which seems to last forever can be abandoned and discarded at any time.
Just as we cannot hold onto the passing of time, it is human destiny that our lives end one day. This is what causes our human minds to be constantly changing and weak. I don’t think the reason why humans were born into this world was to live one way or another like this and die. I was not born to die fighting and insisting against the world, all while living trapped in a narrow consciousness the size of my body. Traditionally, there is a belief in Korea that humankind, the sky and the earth are one. It’s all about consciousness. When our human minds become as big and wide as the sky and earth, we can live beyond life and death, and we can live to the age of the world. To be mentally strong is the state in which one’s mind has become the true mind that never changes.
