Santa Clara Meditation Relationships – If I Had Not Practiced This Meditation

Kang Kim / self-employed

Kang Kim is married, raises children, runs a business and takes care of her mother- and father-in-law. Even though it is difficult, she believed that she could sacrifice her needs, endure and live comfortably. Eventually, her entire family began practicing this meditation and became a happy family that is considerate of one another without any emotional stress. Later, while watching her husband undergo multiple heart surgeries, she remarked that she would not have been able to overcome the situation without this meditation.

‘That’s right’ the undeniable principle of this meditation

I run a butcher shop with my husband and have two daughters, one is a college student and the younger is a middle school student. I gave up my previous life when I married my husband. While living with my mother- and father-in-law, I did my best to care for my husband and his parents, as well as our children, running both the household and our store. I didn’t like to resist or make a fuss, so I kept my opinions and feelings to myself. I thought I had to stay quiet or I’d just cause more stress for myself.

In the summer of 2001, my husband started this meditation. After he finished working at the butcher shop for the day, he would go to meditation and then tell me what he experienced while meditating for about an hour or two. When I heard my husband talk about this meditation, I thought, “that’s right, it’s really true.” The more my husband meditated, the more he began caring for me. He also became less angry.

In the summer of the following year, my husband said to our eldest daughter, who at the time was in her second year of middle school, “there is only one thing I can do for you.” He sent her to meditation youth camp. Our daughter had only participated in the meditation because she had seen her father change over the last year. On the last day of the meditation camp, my husband and I went to pick her up and we couldn’t believe how much our daughter’s face had brightened. I could feel my child had changed. The child who had previously talked to her mother more often than she did to her father, began talking more with her father. In 2003, I decided to start this meditation.

A husband who suffered a heart attack, positively overcomes several major surgeries.

With this meditation, I abandoned all kinds of attachments and feelings: love, joy, sadness, impatience, hatred, tears, pride, bad things, good things. As I continued meditating, I realized that what I did for my family and what I did well, was also for me to be comfortable. Surprisingly, the more I gave up my old thinking, the more my family treated me sincerely and the better my children developed.

On February 1, 2005, it was a cold winter day of 20 below zero. I opened the store at 9am, as usual. After drinking a cup of coffee, I was arranging the storage. When I went to the storage room again 2 hours later, I found my husband passed out and nonrespondent. His skin was beginning to turn blue and I immediately called 911. The ambulance arrived 10 minutes later and he had CPR performed on him as he was taken to a nearby hospital. He got through the worst of the situation but there was more to come. He began to suffer from airway stenosis – or a narrowing of the windpipe – and had to undergo surgery. Over the next three years he was hospitalized and discharged multiple times. The most difficult operation he underwent was to remove some of his trachea and to reconnect it. After going under general anesthesia and undergoing over 10 hours of surgery, he returned to his recovery room.

He had to spend a month with a cast from head to waist. He breathed only through his mouth for three years and was repeatedly hospitalized, but my husband wasn’t irritated. The children were also fine and I was able to help my husband with no problems. The doctors and nurses that cared for him actually told us that we are a couple who is always bright and positive!

If I had not practiced this meditation, could I have been so happy?

Whether or not I practiced this meditation, this was the fate that came to me. If I hadn’t practiced, it would have been as painful as if I was dying. It would have been hell. Not long ago, my eldest child said she would not have gone to college if she had not practiced this meditation. She never had a tutor. After school, she studied by herself, saying that her concentration had improved after her mind was cleansed. I am proud that my eldest daughter is enthusiastic and active in everything she does. My husband is now fully recovered and runs the store once again with me. It’s lovely and I feel a genuine fondness for him. Just looking at his face makes me smile. These days, I am grateful for even the smallest of things. Everything is so precious. I am so thankful that I can truly love my family and everyone around me.
