Santa Clara Meditation Education – The Things That You Learn From Meditation: ‘2 Days 1 Night’ Meditation Camp in Kwangju Women’s University

This last November 26th, there was a meditation camp held for 52 students from Kwangju Women’s University for two days and one night. This program was prepared by the school to help their students with moral and ethical education. With this meditation method, the students could reflect on themselves and empty their minds, further looking inside their mind. Many of the students who participated majored in Dental Hygienics, Language Therapy, Police Law, Service Business and other various majors.

High qualification of education levels, grades, language skills, etc. is not related to job performance!

An online employment portal held a survey from 258 human resources managers. Surprisingly, from that survey 78.7% of the managers stated the following. No matter how high his qualifications may be, in the long term, he cannot give good results if he lacks abilities in areas such as diligence, responsibility, ability to adapt to the group, communication skills, etc.

Thus, they want people who are considerate and help others, who are determined to overcome all kinds of obstacles, and who have the vision to see ‘why we work’ before just knowing ‘how to do a good job’.

The topic of this meditation event is ‘The power to change myself!’ This event was held in Kum-Wha-Soon-Ri resort. Academic Society for Human Completion held this event, and its program consisted of lectures about ‘Mind and Career’ and Meditation.

It is more difficult to help your child to develop a good personality than to simply educate him. How can this meditation be the solution for humanity? Let’s listen to the students who participated in this 2 day event.

1. Self-reflection

On the first day, we had a time to reflect on ourselves with 3 topics.

First, reflect on my mind which has made the present me.
Second, look back on my entire life lived and understand myself.
Third, look at my mind which keeps me from advancing.

With eyes closed, one follows the guide to look back into one’s life lived from childhood according to the topics provided. Since it was their first experience doing this, some of the students said they were a little drowsy, and some of them said it felt unfamiliar to them. But most of the participants said that it was a very valuable moment to look back on their lives lived. Even the minds that I didn’t know existed but remained deep inside of me… it was time to understand my present self.

I was always wondering throughout my life ‘who am I’. But when I came here, I was able to reflect on myself for the first time. Since then, I regretted why I repeated the same mistakes. Now, I really want to change myself.
-Chun-

At the beginning, I thought that I would fall asleep since they said it is a meditation. But no. I can really focus well and reflect on myself. When I opened my eyes, I didn’t feel sleepy or inattentive but had crystal clear eyes. The more I looked back on myself, I was able to understand why I was lacking in confidence and when it started in my life.

2. Getting to know the mind you need to throw away

While you are looking back on yourself, you can see the minds that you need to throw away. Especially the female college students at this camp, what kinds of minds did they want to discard?

Appearance complex, Inferiority towards grades, Jealousy to friends who have a lot of money
Short temper, Timidness, Gullibility, Laziness, Habit of Wasting
Low Confidence, Comparing, Inactivity, Attachment to boyfriend, Grief from losing love…

These are the minds that many students wanted to discard. The original mind is a clear and happy mind. However, the minds that have built up throughout the life cover the original mind and block the chances to show your potential.

When you feel inferior about your appearance, you are always timid and cannot be confident. If you are trapped in your inferiority, no matter how many complements you get, you just look down on yourself and cannot challenge anything easily.

However, there is hope; there is a method to throw all the minds away. When you discard all the minds such as ‘I am pretty’, ‘I am ugly’, ‘I can’t’, ‘I envy somebody’, countless minds that you have built up in your life lived and all the standards, your origin will appear. You can be free from others’ perspective and gain complete confidence.

To be honest, I thought that I had chance to have a good nap since it says it is meditation. But the lecture was so good; it was more than I expected. And this was a good opportunity to look back on myself. To be able to achieve my goal, I can get rid of my negative mind now. It was a very good time and thanks to the lectures and school. – Oh, **

I was so cluttered by countless minds so I could not concentrate well and would easily lose interest in school and others. This program is so useful to me. The mind that I need to throw away; 1. Lack of patience- easily losing interest 2. Lack of concentration, Distraction 3. Laziness which makes me give up easily.  – Lee, **

3. Using subtraction of the mind method to cleanse the mind

On the 2nd day of camp, we focused and spent time on throwing away the minds that we wanted to remove through the meditation method of discarding the mind. Because the time was so short-lived, we were unable to clearly find the original self. But just from experiencing subtraction of the mind, the students stated they felt lighter.

I could find the root cause which constantly remained in me. It was a time where I could organize my mind within through this method of subtracting. – Yang**

I always had many worries and was very conscious of my surroundings. But I could clearly hear in my heart the lecture stating that throwing away that mind will give me freedom. Especially since I had an inferiority dug deep inside my roots, through discarding those minds, I feel free. – Song**

What kind of person do I want to become?

Why did I chose this major?

Who am I?

Developing your character does not happen through hearing somebody lecturing, it can start when you are able to self-reflect. That’s why it is important to have meditation time to be able to focus and look deep within yourself. How have I been living, how do I want to live, and what kind of person am I? When you have the answers to these questions, you can further develop and thus, you can give more positive energy to others.

I have never thought about self-reflection but through this camp, I got to think of all the images of myself from my past. I always thought I wanted to be a diligent person. But when I looked back on myself, I saw that I had never put any effort into trying to become diligent. – Kim**

During the past 2 days while meditating and looking back on myself, I was able to recognize what I really need to do. This morning, my peers and I looked deeper into the mind about what kind of mindset we should have as a dental hygienist. From now on, I am being responsible for my actions and trying to become a person who helps others so when patients come to the dentist, I can help them have healthy teeth, peaceful life, while regaining confidence in themselves. It was a well-spent time. – Chung**
