Santa Clara Meditation Education – What Do Elementary School Students Fear and What Are They Afraid of These Days?
Growing up afraid of the dark or of ghosts is common for most of us. What we fear seems to slowly change with time depending on the era.
Mentioned in the previous blog “Meditation Program for Students”, not only did they throw away studying and test taking stress but they also discarded fear. What elementary children are afraid of these days is a reflection of the mood of today’s era.
What do elementary students fear and what are they afraid of these days?
[School Story #2] Tell the minds of elementary students
Things I feared and was afraid of, hairworms, zombies, tests, darkness, bullies, mom, dad, spanking, being bullied, the apocalypse, food trash… is written down.
The fact that elementary students state being bullied… becoming a bully is what they fear and are most afraid of, pains my heart.
The child states, “I was always scared because of the things I feared and was afraid of, but after throwing it away I am lighter than before and realized the things I feared was not the only thing in the world.”
Things I feared and was afraid of, mom, dad, killer, hairworms, final exams, being bullied, being outcasted in middle school, hateful comments, SNS replies, apocalypse, food trash…
Afraid of mom, dad, being bullied, are the same as the previous child. In the minds of children, the greatest fear they have is being outcasted by their friends. Serious problems such as school bullying, being outcasted, etc. in elementary school shows there is no safety zone.
Even hating Mondays was found! “Every Sunday I am so afraid of the next day, Monday, that will come that I cannot sleep well.” Even elementary students have Monday blues…
By the way, why is food trash a commonality…? haha
But after throwing away all of those minds, there is only one word expressed.
Before emptying, the things I feared and was afraid of bothered my mind. After discarding it, the children obviously see how light their minds are.
Teacher Oh Nam Lee states that the children imagine and worry about the apocalypse that hasn’t even occurred yet. Or there are many times when fear comes up, and no matter what, they suppress it and try not to recall the bad memories with all their energy.
But we explain to them that fear and what you are afraid of, those minds, are made from the things you have seen and heard as you live, which are false minds. So when you throw away those minds, it can be discarded. If you subtract it like that, then you can live confidently with courage, without that fear anymore.
“I didn’t know I had so many fearful minds. Whenever I saw these, I always thought ‘I don’t like it, I am afraid, No!’ But bringing out the pictures, writing it, while doing meditation I thought even more about it and threw it away. So now I am okay.”___ Kim
“I was always afraid of being a victim to sexual abuse, etc, that I was always worried and afraid someone might come when I was home alone. And I was afraid of the hospital, medicine, monsters, movies, etc. But now that I have done this meditation, every day I have no worries and I am no longer afraid to be at home alone.”____ Park
P.S. In this era, there are teachers who are looking for the foundation to teach character and personality of the “mind”. Using this mediation’s method of discarding the mind and combining it with classes. Difficult minds that have been kept inside, as much as it has been thrown away, it becomes brighter, and the wider it gets, these children can find their way. We will look at each story next.
